California is the third largest and most populated state in the United States of America. It is boarded by the Pacific Ocean in the west, Mexico in the south, the state of Oregon in the north, and the states of Nevada and Arizona in the east. Its capital is Sacramento, while the largest city in terms of area and population is Los Angeles; the city of San Francisco, on the other hand, is its financial and legal center. The city of San Diego is the state's oldest major city, established from the Spanish expedition led by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542.
The state is known for its diverse geography which ranges from the Pacific Coast in the western border to the Sierra Nevada mountain range in the east, to the central-dominated Central Valley, to the redwood Douglas fir-covered forests in the northwest to the Mojave Desert at the southeast. Its weather is mostly Mediterranean with temperate forests in the north, arid deserts in the interior portion, and snowy alpine mountains.
Originally populated by various American Indians tribes prior to the Age of Discovery, California was later colonized by the Spanish as a part of the New Spain territory (as Alto California) along with Mexico, before Mexico claimed the state as their own after their independence from Spain in 1821. Later, it was ceded to the United States and became the 31st state to enter the union on September 9, 1850.
Today, California is known as one of the most culturally diverse states in the nation, as well as a global trendsetter in pop culture, politics, and business and finance. Agriculture plays a huge role in California's economy. The state is known for originating the film industry in the country, the birth of the Internet and the personal computer, and the hippie counterculture, among others.
The state is home to many companies such as such Hewlett-Packard and Macintosh Apple, educational institutions as Stanford University, University of Southern California, California State University and University of California, film studios such as Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros., and many tourists spots such as the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz in San Francisco, Disneyland in Anaheim, Graumann's Chinese Theater and the Los Angeles Memorial Stadium in Los Angeles, Hearst Castle in San Luis Obispo, and Hotel del Coronado and the Mission Basilica San Diego de Acala in San Diego.
