Chell is one of the Level Pack characters in LEGO Dimensions. She appears in the 71203 Level Pack for the Portal franchise.

She is the mute main protagonist of the Portal-series, which take place in the Half-life universe (another game-series by Valve, the developer of both series, with Half-life also having a mute main protagonist.). In the Portal-series, almost if not entirely set in the mostly underground Aperture Science Enrichment Center, the player takes control of her as they traverse various physics-based tests, which mostly if not all involve the use of the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device, or simply a Portal Gun, which allows for two interconnected portals to be placed manually on special surfaces.

Chell's origin is unclear; GLaDOS claims that in Chell's file it states that she is adopted. In Portal 2, a long-abandoned science fair poster that was part of "Bring Your Daughter to Work Day" — the same day GLaDOS became rampant — is attributed to "Chell", implying that at least one of her parents worked for Aperture Science.

Background[]

In Portal, Chell awakens in the Enrichment Centre as she is instructed by a computer-voice to complete tests. Later it is revealed that she had been overseen by GLaDOS, an artificial intelligence developed by the scientist of Aperture to aid them in their race against their rival company Black Mesa, before she went rogue and killed most of them as she took control of the facility. While she let the remaining scientists undergo tests to satisfy her need for testing for the company and her dangerous tendency to kill them afterwards, one of the scientist that had survived, Doug Rattmann, put Chell as the first on the list of test subjects because she had a stubborn nature and was shown to never give up, thus being the perfect candidate to defeat GLaDOS.

As Chell outsmarted GLaDOS when she tries to kill her after completing the series of tests, she becomes aware of the AI's true nature and traverses the empty facility to confront her, and succeeds in destroying GLaDOS, but is afterwards dragged back into the facility and put into relaxation stasis. Doug Rattmann, who wanted to help her for what she had done, made sure that she was put into long-term stasis so she would be kept alive while as the systems maintaining the relaxation chambers had gone offline. Doug Rattmann's fate after this point is unknown.

After an unknown time after Portal had taken place, Portal 2 continues the story. Chell is finally awakened out of her long-term stasis by a personality core named Wheatley, who tries to get out of the remains of the abandoned facility with her through GLaDOS' main chamber, but they accidentally reawaken her instead. GLaDOS now openly antagonizes Chell as she has developed an intens hatred against her since she had to re-experience the last moments of herself being destroyed by Chell endlessly over again. While GLaDOS repairs the delapidated Enrichment Centre, Chell goes through another round of tests until Wheatley helps Chell escape, as they go to sabotage GLaDOS' main forms of attacks (her turrets and her deadly neurotoxin), confront her and proceed to do a Core Transfer, effectively putting Wheatley in charge of the facility. However, with his newfound powers he turns on Chell and turns GLaDOS into a potato battery. GlaDOS then remembers Wheatley as being a work of Aperture, designed as a Intelligence dampening sphere, as he was supposed to produce a endless stream of terrible ideas when attached to GLaDOS to keep her murderous tendencies in check. Wheatley, enraged because he is being called out for being a moron by GLaDOS, smashes the elevator they are in, and Chell and GLaDOS fall down into old Aperture.

As both try to get back up together, they learn about the company's history from the recorded messages made by the founder, Cave Johnson, and GLaDOS also realizes that she used to Cave's assistent Caroline, who was later uploaded into a computer to lead the Enrichment Centre as an AI, as that was one of the final decisions of Cave Johnson before he died of moonrock poisoning, as moonrock turned out to be a perfect portal-conductor. When both of them get back in the new Enrichment Centre, they find out that Wheatley had tried to satisfy his urge to test by creating frankenturrets, but these are not smart enough to solve the puzzles. Wheatley then puts Chell, who takes GLaDOS with her, through more tests from GLaDOS (since he can't make up any on his own). Soon the enrichment centre is threathened by a core meltdown as Wheatley has neglected caring about the facility since he has been focusing on the need to keep testing, which he cannot handle very well. However, he soon finds the Cooperative testing initiative, two robots that had been created by GLaDOS earlier to do the testing when Chell would have been gone, and he realizes he doesn't need Chell anymore. He tries to kill them, but they escape Wheatley's death-trap and together, they confront him to try another Core Transfer to prevent the facility form exploding.

GLaDOS comes up with the idea to insert corrupt cores into Wheatley so the Core Transfer will be initiated. When they arrive at Wheatley's lair, they find he had prepared himself, but Chell nontheless succeeds in inserting the Fact Core, the Adventure Core and the Space core that GLaDOS gives her to trigger the Core Transfer. However, Wheatley had prepared for this outcome and he lets off bombs at the stalemate-button needed to do the core transfer. As the facility begins to collapse, Chell can see a hole through the roof where the moon can be seen through. Remembering that moondust is a perfect portal-conductor, she creates a portal on the moon connecting with the facility in a last-ditch effort to survive, and everything in the room is sucked to outher space. While the corrupted cores fly through the portal, Chell holds on to the still attached Wheatley, but GLaDOS is able to reconnect herself to the main computer and grabs Chell, and lets Wheatley fly off into space as Chell loses consciousness.

Chell then awakens in front of GLaDOS, who is now back in control of the facility. GLaDOS claims that she has deleted Caroline, and she decides to let Chell go because she has learned that it is harder to kill her than to just let her go, and she finds she has had enough trouble with her. Chell then is taken in the elevator, with a turret-opera on the way up as a goodby, and she is given her old companion cube before she is let out into the Wheat field outside the facility. Chell's fate after this moment is unknown.

Dimension Crisis[]

GLaD to See You[]

Despite not appearing in the main story, Chell is mentioned in this level. GLaDOS initially confuses Wyldstyle for her.

The Final Dimension[]

A photograph of Chell is seen at the end of this level prior to You Wouldn't Know.

Aperture Science[]

After the events of Portal 2, Chell and Wheatley both return to the Aperture Science Enrichment Center via dimensional vortexs, and are put to tests by GLaDOS. She and Wheatley decide to work together to find a way out of Aperture Science once and for all. After completing various test chambers and escaping from the abandoned areas of the facility, the pair come face to face with GLaDOS in her Chamber. Wheatley then gets the idea to put Space Core into GLaDOS' mainframe. The duo must act quickly as GLaDOS activates the neurotoxin dispensers, and despite the odds Chell makes the Core Transfer and Space Core is given control of the facility. Following GLaDOS' defeat, Chell and Wheatley discover a room behind GLaDOS' Chamber where they find a Gateway; the pair jump through it, leaving their fate unknown.

Trivia[]

  • She is mute in both the Portal series and LEGO Dimensions. This makes her the only completely mute character to naturally be mute in her home series, as Bart Simpson and Fern are able to speak in the series they originated from.
  • She is the first playable video game character of the game, representing Portal 2. The other playable video game characters are: Gamer Kid representing Midway Arcade, Sonic the Hedgehog from the franchise with the same name, and Chase McCain from LEGO City: Undercover.
  • She is modeled after actress Alesia Glidewell, who appears in the LEGO Dimensions E3 trailer as a live action version of the character.
  • Only four characters and one vehicle react to her.
    • Gamer Kid wonders if her name is pronounced "Shell" and ends the conversation as she is the silent type.
    • Doc Brown admires her portal gun.
    • Superman remembers the time he was captured by an evil computer as Chell was captured by GLaDOS. This could either be a reference to Brainiac or the Supercomputer from Superman III.
    • Betelgeuse calls her baby as he might have a crush on her.
    • K.I.T.T. greets Chell by noting that she seems anxious, and wonders if she's had a bad experience with an A.I. recently.
  • Her toy tag resembles the colour of her outfit and features the logo of Aperture Science, the place where she was held in by GLaDOS.
  • She is the only character with the Portal Gun Ability, allowing her to create portals on the white panels to access inaccessible areas and remove enemies in the way to advance.
