Background[]
Vastra was a Silurian detective who shared a house at 13 Paternoster Row with Jenny Flint, her maid and eventual wife, in Victorian London. Alongside Jenny and the Sontaran nurse Strax, Vastra investigated unusual activities under the title of the Paternoster Gang. She is thought by many to be the inspiration for Sherlock Holmes, Conan Doyle having adapted many of her adventures to suit his most famous character. She first encountered The Doctor when workers on the London Underground accidentally disturbed a Silurian Bunker under London, leading to deaths on both sides including several of Vastra's family, until the Doctor was able to convince her of not resorting to revenge. Inspired Vastra undertook several roles including a performer at Henry Gordon Jago's Theatre and a professional thief before finding her knack for solving crimes. She, Jenny and eventually Strax investigated many crimes over Victorian London, occasionally assisting the Doctor.
