The sewers made a significant part in Ghostbusters II. There was some "pinky" goo which reacts to sound and music.
They were abandoned by 1884. The Ghostbusters then try to solve Dana's mystery by drilling a hole leading into the sewers
When Ray, Egon & Winston went down to the sewers, they notice there was a ghost train, which, at first, scared Winston but then Ray found the area the 2nd time. Winston was caught by the pink goo which also forced Ray & Egon to go into the pink goo which led these boys to the Metropolitan Museum of Art which speculated the location of Vigo's painting.
