When Dorothy's friends came to the Witch's Castle to rescue her, they stole three of the Winkies' uniforms and snuck into the castle. After the Witch died, the Winkies redeem themselves and thank Dorothy for killing her. This strongly implies that they were merely slaves to the Witch and did her evil bidding because they had no choice and feared her wrath. |
